Friday Flip-Offs 7/30

July 29, 2010

It’s Friday. I’m flipping. A week from now I’ll be in NYC for Blogher, exhausted but having a blast.

Head on over to Gigi at Kludgy Mom to check out the other flippers, again not the pageant kiddie teeth, since I’m still too much of a dumbass to make the linky code work. Awesome.

Also? Why don’t you do your own flips and link up this week? You know you wanna…

Yellow jackets/hornets/stinging things with wings-So I have a super smart, and hot, hubs and a super sweet, but dumb, dog. Clifford the big red dog, we didn’t name him. Anyhoo, chipmunks, and a random armadillo have taken over our yard. We have tons of little holes everywhere. What we thought were chipmunk holes. So the other day J shoves a stick in the hole. And? It wasn’t chipmunks. About 1000 stinging things swarmed out and attacked them. J ran across the street screaming and calling for Clifford to come. Since he, Cliff not J, knows he’s not allowed to cross the street he ended up getting stung while he was trying what to do. Screw you things with stingers.

The can I ask you a question people in the mall– Flip off. I hate you. You should be against the law with wanting to rub me with weird products, yank out my eyebrow hairs and massage me in the middle of the mall. That’s relaxing. Your whole, “May I ask you a question?” Guess what? You just did.

School supply lists. You must have 5 notebooks in these exact pantone colors, and by the way there have never been notebooks even produced in these colors. I swear teachers put them on there just to be hateful. And? Way to kill any self-expression. I still fondly remember my trapper keeper with the unicorn, rainbow and fluffy cloud hearts that I carried proudly through first grade.

So that causes me to give a hearty middle finger to trapper keeper folders-your handy multiplication tables are why I still have a hard time with math.(Because our teachers let us put a fortress of folders around us so the other children couldn’t cheat.) But I can totally compute instantly in my head how much something is if it’s 25%, 30%, etc off. It’s a skill.

Word verification-I comment on LOTS of blogs and try really hard to visit everyone who stops here but you? YOU make that task take twice as long.

That’s all I got this week kids. What about you? What irked you this week?

SOOOOOOOO with you on word verification…drives me crazy!! And as for stinging things – we get biting flies here and I’d like to flip them off. My poor son is afraid to go outside!

I can’t wait to hear all about Blogher 🙂

  2. July 29, 2010 11:01 PM

Don’t feel like a dumbass, WordPress don’t allow ‘that code’. 🙄

I could write a whole “Friday Flip-Offs” post on all the wonderful codes WordPress doesn’t allow.

Word verification drives me crazy. Yesterday, someone commented so I tried commenting back on their blog. I had to rewrite my comment TWICE, type in my name/URL, and type in a huge word verification code. I’d rather delete spam then make my visitors type all that.

That’s how I do it. It’s MUCH easier to delete 100 spam comments than to enter one word verification thing. Takes two seconds for me to clear out spam, even when there are 100’s of them.

I’m with you on stinging things, as my son was also stung this week by some flying buzzing thingy. But I’d like to kindly add all critters. They stink and are just gross. And I remember those trapper keepers from back in the day. I love my followers, but word verification+ a math problem too= OMG. It makes me so frazzled I can’t even add it in my head. I had to get out a calculator the other day. And I’m not admittting that here either. You are the 2nd person who couldn’t get that linky to work. Maybe it’s messed up??

What is WITH the math problems?

  4. July 29, 2010 11:39 PM

That is just wrong of teachers to put the restriction on color of notebooks. Geez. Give the kids a break. They are only young once.

But then it wouldn’t be fair since everyone has to be the same…despite that not being true. Why can’t they let them express themselves? Jeez.

  5. July 30, 2010 12:40 AM

We’ve got a large amount of wasps around at the moment, I’m sure there’s a nest somewhere in the garden but I can’t find it. Hope your dog’s ok? We also have the question people in our shopping centre. There’s about 10 different places where they are set up and I end up walking past scowling, hoping they’ll leave me alone!

  6. July 30, 2010 3:44 AM

Yay to your flip off of mall people – i flipped them off last week!

  7. July 30, 2010 4:01 AM

I’m right there with you on the school supplies. Not only does my son have to have 4 specific colors of notebooks, but also those same colors of folders. Oh, not just any folders either. They must be pocket folders with prongs. I love how specific they are; they underline “with prongs” lest we forget. And why do they have to specify pocket folders. Aren’t the pockets implied when you call it a folder?

What is a pocketless folder then? Weird.

  8. July 30, 2010 6:18 AM

Yeah Amy, I am with you on the notebook colors. It is very irritating trying to locate them and I feel sorry for the kids because they are not able to choose their own school supplies. My kids love to shop for school supplies, but if the list tells you exactly what to get the fun is sucked out of the event. Lately I have been receiving a flier at the end of the previous year saying that for X dollars I can buy a bundle with all of the supplies needed to be delivered to the child on the first day of school. Way to kill the fun!

I’m going to do the bundle from now on. If you can’t pick items anyways what’s the point in going to the store?

  9. July 30, 2010 8:21 AM

Yeah…the school supplies are enough to make me have a meltdown in Wal-mart. Of course just being in WalMart is often enough to make me have a meltdown. You are SO right about the folder colors with 2 prongs (not 3!) and one pocket (not 2!) and plastic (not paper!)…I can find the blue folder with 3 prongs and 2 pockets made of paper but not the yellow with 2 prongs, one pocket and made of plastic.

Fortunately our school does prepackaged school supplies now. For the value price of $100, I didnt’ have to fight this battle for my 2 kids’ supplies this year. PRICELESS.

Oh my gosh….I totally just realized that is why I do not know my multiplication tables either….it all just came together. Dang you Lisa Frank Trapper Keeper with the matching folder!!!!

There’s a whole generation of math handicapped folk JUST due to Trapper Keepers. I’m shocked that nobody has sued them.

  11. July 30, 2010 10:42 AM

It would be easier to tell you what didn’t irk me. I am very easily irked this week. I used to love my trapper keepers, do they still make those? I’m guessing no.

Oh, and here’s a a true story for you that explains my hatred of all things yellow and sting-y: when I was a little girl – small enough to still be wearing pigtails, I was tromping around in the fields with my friend and her damn little brother. Said brother jumped squarely in the middle of a yellow jacket nest, but ran quickly enough to escape their wrath. I, however, ended up with them tangled in my hair, down my shirt, even in my underwear.

Terribly traumatizing. I feel for your dumb dog.

  12. July 30, 2010 11:05 AM

Agree, Agree, Agree! It seems we are cut from similar cloth! I say screw the certain color folder and send your kid with whatever they want. what can the teacher really do about it…

  13. July 30, 2010 11:13 AM

I ♥ trapper keepers. I’m still and always will be dumb at math, but I’m organized ;). Do I have word verification on my blog? If so, I’d like to rid my blog of it and now. LOL

Our school list says specifically “NO TRAPPER KEEPERS” – pretty sure they are communists. And I’m flipping off Walmart buyers and their lack of math skills for never ordering enough glue sticks, because apparently they can’t calculate that 8 bajillion children in our district all needing 24 glue sticks each means they should only carry 100 of them.

Target has been out of 24 count of Crayola crayons for WEEKS. They’re a mile from the school-is it THAT hard for them to figure out they maybe should stock up?

  15. July 30, 2010 12:42 PM

I am with you on the School List. Its insane! Like many ares the public schools here are grossly over-populated. So when these supply lists go out its like freakin black Friday at the local Target. I mean I get that the teacher wants all the kids to have the same thing so there is no arguing (I guess) but for real! There is no way I am waking up at the ass crack of dawn to get some stupid specified type of pencil – flip off, eh!

I would like to add my top of the list, grade A, boldfaced and underlined Flip Off of the week: HEALTH INSURANCE : specifically Anthem Blue Cross PPO. I started writing my comment and it turned into a Blog Post……

  16. July 30, 2010 5:12 PM

Ask a question? You just did – AWESOME!

What made me mad this week – arrogant doctors and enablers. They get me every time!!

  17. July 30, 2010 5:30 PM

ROFL on the school supply list! So true!!!

  18. July 31, 2010 4:47 AM

Shitty drivers. I can’t tell you how many people I have to pass on the right and my levels of apoplexy are pretty high right now seeing as I encountered exactly 27 shitty drivers today alone driving to and from Asheville. TWENTY SEVEN.

  19. July 31, 2010 4:48 AM

“I still fondly remember my trapper keeper with the unicorn, rainbow and fluffy cloud hearts that I carried proudly through first grade.”

I think I had the same one! I am with you on the school lists. Our teachers are so bad about getting us the lists. One year I followed the generic list at the store and ended up having to go back and getting all of the extras the teacher wanted. (by the way that was certain colors of folders, one for each subject) Talk about control freak!

  20. July 31, 2010 10:00 AM

LOL – yes, school supply lists drive me crazy. Where the hell do I find the “extra strength” elmer glue sticks vs. the regular? Really? And yes, we had to get 2 purple folders, 2 blue, 2 red, 2 yellow, 2 green…who the flip cares really? So happy to find your blog. Visiting from the Saturday Lady Bloggers Tea Party!
    Warmly, Tracy

  21. July 31, 2010 5:12 PM

I hear ya on the school supplies. My son is starting kindergarten, and I looked at the list and almost choked. How can they need that much crap for kindergarten? Geez.

  22. July 31, 2010 5:12 PM

Oh I am totally on board with the people asking questions in the mall. I hate those people!!! And word verification. I am not a fan.

  23. July 31, 2010 5:14 PM

Yes, to the word verification. You have to moderate comments anyhow.. so, just get rid of the word ver. I’m so with you on that flip off.

  24. July 31, 2010 6:39 PM

I love your Friday Flip Offs (I really need to do that on my blog one of these days…such a great way to vent!). So glad I visited from Lady Bloggers. 🙂 I totally agree with all your flip offs too.

  25. July 31, 2010 11:08 PM

Word verification stinks because if you’re like me and just half assedly look at the word, then you get it wrong and you have to type it again and who are you keeping out? Seriously? Who is so dangerous yet so stupid that they could not leap hop over word verification if they’re out to commit a cyber crime. It drives me bananas.

And my girls have all graduated from the private school they were in, but their school supply list was out of control. It was special item after special item and then a bazillion dollars later for each kid. I think the teachers did that because they could, because there weren’t any guidelines like there are in public school, so I think they figured they could get the parents to go all out and get everything they wanted. Public high school has been a dream compared to that.

  26. July 31, 2010 11:44 PM

I was so sad when my kid started school and couldn’t have a Trapper Keeper. I loved mine so much!

Also, totally agree about word verification. Hate it!

  27. August 1, 2010 1:33 PM

OMG, the mall people… They drive me CRAZY!!! And they always seem to come up to me when I’m in a rush to get anywhere. Surely they can recognize that when someone is rushing through the mall, it might not be the best time/place to approach them about straightening the hair on one side of my head.

    Great flips!
